From local competitions to prestigious international stages, this program continues to inspire not only its members but also music enthusiasts around the world.
The Pride of Owasso’s accolades speak for themselves. Since earning its first OSSAA State Sweepstakes Award in 1980, the Owasso High School Band has accumulated an impressive 120 Sweepstakes Awards. The band has consistently achieved First Divisions in the OSSAA marching competition for 47 consecutive years, a testament to the rigor and commitment of its members and leaders.
Adding to its storied history, The Pride of Owasso is the only band in the state of Oklahoma to have been awarded both the Sudler Flag of Honor (1997) and the Sudler Shield (2004)—internationally recognized awards presented by the John Philip Sousa Foundation for excellence in concert band and marching band performance. This distinction solidifies its legacy as a premier organization among high school bands worldwide.
Beyond its local and state success, The Pride of Owasso has made its mark on some of the biggest stages in music. The band has performed in elite events such as the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (1999, 2012), showcasing its world-class talent to industry professionals and educators.
The marching band has dazzled global audiences with multiple appearances in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. The latter, considered one of the most prestigious parades in the world, has invited The Pride of Owasso to perform an impressive six times. Additionally, in 2014, the band was named “Best Overall Band” at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland, demonstrating its ability to captivate audiences far beyond U.S. borders.
The Pride of Owasso has earned its place among the elite in the competitive marching band circuit. It has frequently competed as a Bands of America Grand Nationals Semi-finalist, reaching the finals in 2005 (finishing 12th) and 2011 (finishing 7th). The band has also taken top honors as Grand Champions at the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Championships and was named a St. Louis Super-Regional Champion in 2012.
These achievements underscore the band’s capability to compete with and excel against the finest high school programs in the nation. It’s not just about competition, though. Through its participation in prestigious events, the band aims to foster a love of music while teaching invaluable life lessons.
What sets The Pride of Owasso apart from other programs is its emphasis on holistic development. While musical excellence remains its central focus, the program is equally committed to cultivating skills like discipline, citizenship, responsibility, and leadership in its students. These values are at the heart of the band’s philosophy, supported by a community where every band member understands that their behavior, effort, and teamwork directly impact the collective success of the group.
Underpinning this success is the unwavering support of the Owasso community. Parents, alumni, and local businesses work tirelessly alongside the band staff and members to ensure the program continues to thrive. Their dedication reinforces the idea that The Pride of Owasso is more than just a school program; it’s a deeply rooted part of Owasso’s identity.
At its core, The Pride of Owasso represents far more than accolades and trophies. It represents an enduring commitment to artistry, excellence, and education. Generations of students have walked through its ranks, learning to transform discipline into creativity, hard work into harmony, and potential into achievement.
Through its performances and competitions, The Pride of Owasso not only elevates its own members but also inspires others to reach for greatness. It stands as proof of what can be accomplished when passion and perseverance meet purpose.
